The idea of getting a workout while doing something I needed to do was attractive–I’ve never been the treadmill type. I had fond memories of riding my bike as a kid, and the element of adventure also appealed to me: at that point, I didn’t know anyone who commuted by bike. My commute is about 5 miles round trip, mostly through neighborhoods and side streets. I started out just riding to work, but now I frequently cycle over to local restaurants and bars as well as the grocery store.
The main reason I bike commute is really just to see how long I can go without filling up my car with gas. Its been 2 months since my last fill up and I still have a quarter tank left. This is mainly due to the fact that the tobacco road bike path spits you out right at the Southpoint mall : )
I often ride my bike to Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill and take it on the Robertson Scholars bus to Duke. Most of the Robertson buses have a bike rack on front for three bikes. Triangle Transit buses also have the racks on front, for days the Robertson bus isn’t running. So easy to do. I love biking to campus.
